The Canucks were established in 1945, but would not play as an official NHL team until the 1970-71 season. At this time, the NHL was expanding and Tom Scallen had purchased the team on the premise that it would gain entry into the league during its massive expansion. The team initially played in the Eastern Conference, but after only four seasons, the Canucks would be moved into the Western Conference, where it remains today.

At first, like many of the 12 expansion teams of this era, the Canucks struggled to put notches in the win column. However, after about a decade of struggles, the team started to gel and became more relevant in the standings. The 1981-82 season was nothing spectacular, but the Canucks caught fire at the perfect time and ripped through the playoffs, capturing the team's first conference title.

The team's regular season efforts remained similar for the next decade, but the 1990s saw the team start to rise again. The 1993-94 season ended in the same manner as the 1981-82 season, with another conference championship. While the Canucks took the Rangers to seven games, they full short of winning the final game by a score of 3-2.

The 2010-11 season marked a dramatic change in the franchise. Unlike other years when the team relied on getting hot at the right time in order to make a run in the playoffs, the Canucks dominated the regular season and landed the top spot in the Western Conference playoff bracket. The team led the league with 117 points and hopes to win its first Stanley Cup.
