Atlanta Hawks History

This franchise was originally established as the Bisons in 1946. It did not take long for the Bisons to realize the team needed a new home and only 12 games into its first season, the team was moved to Illinois. The name of the team was also changed at this time to the Blackhawks. In 1949, the team was part of the initial launch of the NBA.

The Blackhawks were experiencing little success in Illinois and once again decided to move the franchise in 1951. Still seeing little success, the migratory team hit the road and settled in St. Louis. This seemed to mark a turn for the better as the team's record and attendance was finally beginning to improve. The St. Louis Hawks reached the NBA finals in both the 1957 and 1958 seasons. The 1958 season saw the team capture its first title, defeating the Boston Celtics under the leadership Bob Pettit.

Success was short lived, though, as the team started to immediately see another decline in attendance and it struggled to stay competitive. Once again, the Hawks took to the road, this time settling in its current location, Atlanta, in 1968. Over the last several decades, the Hawks have had some dominant talent wear the team colors, but it has yet to break through and win that elusive second championship title.
