Other New Jersey Teams
New Jersey sports fans are spoiled in that they actually draw their sports teams from three different areas, depending upon where they are located. North Jersey fans mostly root for New York teams. That being the case, the Yankees and Giants are among the favorites. South Jersey fans share Philadelphia interests and root for the Eagles and Phillies. The only time they are at odds is when the NHL season hits, as locals are split between the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Philadelphia Flyers.

New Jersey Nets History
Founded in 1967, the team was actually a member of the ABA, the NBA's direct competition at the time. The early years were a bit interesting, as the team never really had an arena it could truly call home. Finally, the team settled on using the Nassau Veterans Coliseum for the majority of its games. The team had up and down seasons for those first few seasons, but things were about to change after the 1973 season concluded.
Julius Erving was drafted by the Nets before the start of the 1974 season and the team would never look back. With a talent-loaded roster, Erving, who was nicknamed Dr. J, would lead the team to an ABA Championship that season. The following regular season was much the same, but the Nets were shocked in the first round of the playoffs by the Spirits of St. Louis. The loss sparked a fire in the team though, as the Nets would once again tear through the regular season. This time, the team would not be denied, besting the Nuggets to win the 1976 ABA title.
Following its second championship season, the Nets were absorbed into the NBA. While the move to the NBA was coveted, the team also had to pay an entry fee as part of the deal. The $3.2 million fee along with an almost $5 million paid to the Knicks due to a turf war, the franchise was now experiencing financial difficulties. This caused ownership to sell Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers, as he was refusing to play because the Nets could not pay him his promised salary. This would mark the downfall of a once great franchise.
The team would make it back to glory in the early 1980s and 2000s, but would fall short of winning a coveted NBA title. The most recent brush with the title came in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, when the team would make it to the finals. Jason Kidd was thought to be the final piece of the puzzle, but the Nets would fall to the Lakers and Spurs in successive championships.
