Minnesota was lobbying for a football team in the late 1950's and both the AFL and the NFL were sizing up this town to add an expansion franchise. The NFL won out and the Vikings were established in 1961 as a member of the NFL West division. They would take a few years to build up a good team, but by the end of the decade, they would be geared up for their first golden age.

This golden age started in 1969 when the Vikings organization won their first and only NFL championship. This was the last year the NFL or AFL championship would be given out as the merger occurred a year later. This championship is often overshadowed by the fact that they lost the Super Bowl that year to the Chiefs, but they would make it back to this pinnacle game 3 times over the next six seasons. Much to the dismay of Vikings fans, however, they would lose in each Super Bowl appearance.

Since 1976, the Vikings have been trying to get back into Super Bowl contention. This has come to fruition because the Vikings were only an interception and a few fumbles away from reaching this game in 2009. The Vikings have loaded up since bringing on new head coach Brad Childress in 2005. Childress has added an explosive offense coupled with a dominant defense based around a strong pass rush that is anchored by Jared Allen. This team also drafted the Rookie of the Year in 2009 with the addition of former Florida Gator, Percy Harvin.
