Phoenix Suns History

The middle of Arizona is not an area that many thought able to support a professional sports franchise. This is one of the major reasons that few sports risked putting a franchise in this area. However, the NBA took a chance and was rewarded as the Phoenix Suns have flourished from its very first days in the city.

Even though the Suns would not win a division title until 1981, the team would precede this accomplishment by taking a more difficult road through the playoffs and reaching the finals in 1976. Basketball fans will remember this as one of the many golden era's for the Boston Celtics, the team the Suns would lose the championship to in six games. As previously mentioned, the Suns would capture a division title in 1981, but the playoff run that year was cut short.

The next dominant era of the team came courtesy of the arrival of Charles Barkley. Although he was a controversial player, the fans did and continue to love him years after retiring. There is also little about his basketball skills to argue. His dominant play led the team to two division titles and a finals appearance in 1993, a year in which Barkley would also earn MVP honors. Once again, however, the team would run into a dynasty, this time in Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Repeating history, the team would win the division again in 1995, but make an early exit from the playoffs.

Steve Nash was the next great player to wear the Suns colors and his play led the team through its greatest string of dominant regular season play. While the Suns would not reach the finals with Nash, the team would win the division three consecutive years from 2005-2007. During this stretch, Nash would become only the second Suns player to win MVP honors, taking the award in both 2005 and 2006.
