Toronto Raptors History

Up until 1969, the only major sport played in Canada was hockey. Major League Baseball awarded Montreal a franchise in 1969 and then awarded Toronto a franchise in 1977. While the Expos failed to capture the interest of the country, the Blue Jays became a fan favorite. The incredible run made to a World Series Championship probably had a little something to do with the NBA's decision to give Toronto an expansion team to begin in play in 1995.

Like most new teams, the Raptors struggled a bit in the first few years of existence. However, the team was able to land Vince Carter in a blockbuster trade, marking a dramatic improvement in the talent of the team. With a fine supporting cast, Carter would lead the Raptors into the playoffs for the next several years. However, Carter would leave the team via a trade in 2004, and the new face of the team would be Chris Bosh. The 2004 season would also mark the end of Glen Grunwald as GM, as he was fired when the Raptors missed the playoffs that season.

While Bosh did step up his play, the team could not win on the road. Things got worse the following season as Bosh went down with an injury and the Raptors finished the season with a dismal 27-55 record. The 2006-07 season saw the entire team overhauled. One of the only players remaining from previous seasons was Bosh, as there was little to fault in his play. He proved the team right by posting career highs in several categories. The team was also back on the right side of .500 at the conclusion of the season. During this season, the team would also win its first division title.
